1 May 2017 - Mike Basil-Jones, solicitor and notary public, joined JAG legal. Mike has practiced law in the Hutt Valley for over 30 years, most recently in Petone.
November 2016- John Grigg and Penny le Page retired from regular practice. While no longer in the office on a weekly basis, they both continue to be available for us to utilise their considerable legal wisdom, knowledge and skills as necessary.
Many matters will be able to be resolved for you personally and efficiently by the team, but there may be times when you will be referred to a barrister or other specialist to deal with your specific issues. JAG Legal maintains a close working relationship with a number of specialist barristers and others who provide specific expertise in particular matters.
JAG Legal commenced in 2008. Initially the office was located in Paraparaumu but in 2011 the office moved to Lower Hutt. At first, the firm was staffed by its two partners, Merv Gaskin and Nicola Jones. By mid 2011 two part time support staff joined the team.
2015 saw big changes. Established Lower Hutt firm Grigg and le Page joined forces with Jag Legal. With the expanded business new premises were needed and the firm moved upstairs into purpose built offices.
Upon the merger with Grigg and le Page, Gemma McDougall was employed and she joined Merv and Nicola in partnership in October 2015.
Mike Basil-Jones, a long-standing Petone solicitor, joined the JAG Legal team in May, 2017.
Merv joined a Lower Hutt legal firm in 1976 and has practiced as a general practice lawyer, principally in Lower Hutt, since that time.
In those almost 40 years, Merv has developed experience in a wide range of legal work with an emphasis on business and commercial law, wills and trusts, subdivision of land and property law and trusteeship for charitable and not for profit organisations amongst a wide range of other areas of the law.
In other appointments, Merv is also both a professional director of companies and has a specialist appointment as a lawyer to a trust board which provides several superannuation schemes including a Kiwisaver scheme as well as trusteeship of welfare funds.
Merv is also a Notary Public to deal with international matters.
Outside of the practice, Merv and his wife, Sue, have three children, all of whom are now adults. Merv and Sue enjoyed family life being involved with the children as they grew up, their schools, sporting endeavours and other activities.
Through this Merv found time to be on the Board of Trustees and/or the Board of Proprietors of Hutt International Boys School for 10 years.
Also for nearly 30 years, Merv was an urban volunteer fire fighter for the New Zealand Fire Service in his home community of Silverstream. For the last 10 years of that service Merv was the Chief Fire Officer of the Silverstream Fire District.
Nicola has been practicing as a solicitor for over 10 years, principally in Lower Hutt.
During that time Nicola has experience in advising clients on a range of legal matters including buying and selling property, trusts, estates and succession planning and with a particular expertise in advising on relationship property and separation matters.
In terms of commercial and business matters, Nicola also has experience in advising companies, partnerships and sole traders. Nicola has developed experience in elder abuse issues, residential care subsidies and issues arising for residents of care homes.
Prior to a career in law, Nicola was a primary school teacher for 6 years. Nicola is married with four children making for a busy home life.
Nicola is actively involved in the school community and involved in wider community issues.
Gemma began her legal career in 2006 working as a solicitor in a busy Lower Hutt law firm. After a stint in Scotland, where she met her husband, she returned to New Zealand in 2012 and worked for a central Wellington law firm before joining JAG Legal.
Gemma and her husband have a young toddler and a new house in the Hutt Valley. She is currently working four days a week with Wednesday being her day off.
Gemma specialises in all types of property transactions and private client work including relationship property (contracting out agreements and separation agreements), family trusts, wills, enduring powers of attorney, estate planning and estate administration.
Gemma also advises clients on business structures and commercial arrangements for small to large sized businesses.

After growing up in Wainuiomata and studying at Victoria University, Nicola Goss has worked in private practice in Lower Hutt since 2001.
She has previously been both an associate and a partner in several Lower Hutt firms.
Nicola’s main areas of law are Property (both residential and commercial) Trusts & Asset Protection; and Estate Administration and Planning, including Wills and Powers of Attorney.
Nicola and her partner live in Lower Hutt. In her spare she enjoys keeping active at Les Mills gym, doing yoga and walking her dog around the Hutt Valley firebreaks. Nicola also enjoys traveling and planning the next adventure.
Arthur grew up in the Wellington region and attended Victoria University where he graduated with a Bachelors of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Philosophy.
Prior to joining JAG Legal, Arthur spent time with a leading immigration consultancy, and provided advice on residential tenancies for a government department. He also volunteered with the Wellington Community Law centre where he gained valuable experience advising clients on a wide range of legal matters.
In his spare time he enjoys boxing, snowboarding and a good game of squash.

John started working for a leading law firm in Lower Hutt in 1974 and in 1981 together with his wife, Penny le Page, established the practice of Grigg & le Page which operated successfully for 34 years until it became part of JAG Legal in 2015.
In the 40 years since he was admitted to the bar John has been involved primarily in business and commercial law, wills, estates and trusts, subdivision of land and most aspects of property law.
John has been a member of Hutt Rotary for over 30 years and chairs the Hutt Valley Budget Advice Service. He was born and brought up in Lower Hutt and has lived in Eastbourne for over 35 years where he is a trustee of the local Community Trust.

Penny has practiced as a lawyer for just over 40 years in Lower Hutt, 34 of those years in the husband and wife practice of Grigg & le Page, until that practice became part of JAG Legal in 2015.
Penny’s primary interest has been in the field of Family Law and she was one of the original appointees to the Lawyer for Child pool. She also has extensive experience in Elder Law and has been on the appointments panel for lawyers representing people who are the subject of applications for Management and Welfare Guardian Orders as well as a person carrying out that role. Relationship property and care of children are special interests.
Penny and her husband John have three adult children and four grandchildren. Penny has interests in sports and education matters. She was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Muritai School and has been involved in a number of community organisations.
Jane first worked with Merv, as his secretary, in 1987. Prior to that time, Jane worked in a legal practice in Upper Hutt in a variety of roles.
By the early 1990’s Jane was appointed as Practice Administrator for the Partners of the then firm. This was a significant management role which Jane held until she, and her husband Bob, traveled overseas and then started their family.
Once their two boys were born Jane worked part time at legal offices in Upper Hutt and returned to work with Merv and Nicola in 2011.
Outside of work life is busy for Jane. Her sons are at college, she is working towards a full Legal Executive’s qualification and she also manages to find time to pursue her interests in the arts.
Jessica is a diligent and enthusiastic Registered Legal Executive (Associate) with over 10 years experience in various property areas including residential conveyancing, refinancing transactions and subdivisions.
She has a particular passion for residential conveyancing and is dedicated to providing a high standard of professional client care and services.
Whilst working full time in a law office Jessica obtained her Legal Executive qualification in 2003. She further enhanced her studies by obtaining a Diploma in Conveyancing in 2011.
Outside of work Jessica enjoys spending time with her young family, horse riding and generally enjoying life.
Nicole grew up in the Wairarapa and Manawatu, and attended school in both these areas.
She studied at Victoria University gaining a BA majoring in International Relations and with a Commercial Law minor. In 2014 she completed her Legal Executive qualification. Nicole became a registered legal executive in 2016.
Nicole is family orientated and enjoys playing social hockey on Sundays. She is enjoying the challenge of working in a busy legal office and learning new skills.
Melissa grew up in the Bay of Plenty and has been living in Wellington since 2011.
She has worked at Land Information New Zealand and Airways New Zealand where she supported teams of solicitors and senior managers, and gained extensive experience in corporate environments. Melissa returned to private practice in October 2015 after graduating with her NZILE Diploma.
Melissa joined the JAG Legal team in March 2017 and predominantly works in areas of residential and commercial conveyancing, refinancing, trusts and assets planning. Melissa enjoys working with first home buyers and prides herself on building relationships with her clients and achieving the best results for them.
Melissa lives locally in Lower Hutt with her husband Ben and outside of work likes travel, spending time with family and friends, exploring new cuisines, cooking and good red wine!
Leonie is an experienced legal executive who has worked for various firms in Wellington and the Hutt Valley. She has gained considerable knowledge and skills in the areas of residential conveyancing & refinancing, family trusts, wills and estate administration.
She enjoys working with clients and building relationships. Leonie believes in quality work and providing a high standard of client care and service.
Outside of work she enjoys family time, socialising, travel and watching rugby and tennis.
Sue and Liana form the administration team at JAG Legal.
Sue has been married to Merv since 1979 but until 2011 had never worked in a legal office.
Originally trained as a radiographer, Sue worked as a Teacher Aide and in the school office at Silverstream School for nearly twenty years.
Sue initially helped at JAG Legal in the school holidays, but by 2011 so many administrative tasks had been delegated to her, she began working afternoons at the firm while continuing to work at school in the morning.
With the continued growth in the firm Sue resigned from her school job and now works solely for JAG Legal.
Liana joined the JAG Legal team shortly before the merger with Grigg and le Page.
Liana grew up in Stokes Valley and attended Upper Hutt College.
Prior to joining JAG Legal she worked for a real estate firm.Liana enjoys the challenge of working in a busy legal office and is currently studying towards becoming a legal executive.
Liana is family orientated and enjoys taking younger family members to rugby on Saturday mornings. She and her partner have recently purchased their first home and are spending time renovating it.
